Hobbes and Lock Views on Property Essay Example for Free
Hobbes and Lock Views on Property Essay Property, whether personal or private, is thought of and looked at differently with different point of views. John Locke (1632 ââ¬â 1704) and Karl Marx (1818 ââ¬â 1883) had very strong and also very diverse views of property and its importance in the human society. John Locke saw private property as the basis of freedom and liberty. Locke believed that people were born free, equal and were born with three rights that were natural and God-given; these rights were life, liberty, and property. Locke, who believed in liberal democracy, considered property not just possessions that we physically use and own, but rather that property is what à gwe mix with our labour, the labour of our body and the work of our handsà h. (The Human Project; pg151). Property is something that you have put your labour into, the work, investment, energy or effort that you put into something makes it an extension of you, which you own. It is not only your land or personal possessions which are considered property, but this can be in regards with anything from a product, an idea, a service, a relationship, sex or religion. He decided liberal democracy was the best way to protect our property because with too much of a strong government, they could threaten our natural rights. Property was extremely important to Locke because he believed that it defines the boundaries of individual freedom. When you have earned and own your property, you are free to do whatever you wish in the limitations of your property without repercussions by the state or government. Locke believed that property was a primarily good and positive thing and therefore he believed that it was something that should be protected by the government because it is one of the three natural rights that we are given. Another idea of property was from Karl Marx whose opinion on property was quite the opposite of Lockeà fs; it was based on communism, although Marx himself was not a communist. Marxà fs attitude of property was that private property was the basis of exploitation and inhumanity. While Locke saw private property as something people should be proud of and gave people incentive to work, Marx believed that private property created an excruciating difference between the à ghavesà h and the à ghave-notsà h and therefore he wanted to abolish this conflicted difference and the only way he believed that was possible was to eliminate private property. Marx believed that there was a huge difference between the rich and the poor, which he also described as the à havesà and the à have-notsà , the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, the powerful and the powerless, or to put simply, the owners and the workers. Marx divided property into two theories: personal property and private property. Personal property was defined as something that is used by the individual on a daily basis, such as their automobile, their home in which they live, their appliances and their clothes or personal possessions. Private property was defined as something that they own but do not use, such as an apartment they lease out to rent, their factory and factory workers, or a long-term investment. He believed to eliminate this barrier between the à havesà and the à have-notsà so that classes would be equal in society would have to abolish private property. Marx wanted to dispose of private property, not personal property. If private property was removed, Marx believed the separation and division of labour between the à havesà and the à have-notsà would be eliminated because it would bring an end to exploitation, alienation, means of production and opiates; in other words, we would no longer have to use our bodies to make profit for someone else and we would be able to put ourselves into our work and feel independent and proud of the work we accomplished. This would allow individuals to feel personal satisfaction from their work as well as eliminate the classes in society. Locke and Marxà fs views on property were very different from one another. Locke saw fundamental values in property in which the government should protect while Marx saw private property as the reason to many problems in the human society because of the unequal distribution of wealth and therefore wanted the government to get rid of private property. I do not think that private property should be abolished as Marx recommends. This is because I believe in Lockeà fs theory that having property gives individuals the sense of independence and accomplishment and by people having possessions they feel like they have earned something by the work that they do. Without this feeling of owning something, society would not be as it is today as people need encouragement and incentive for what they are doing. In this sense, I feel that Marxà argument that private property should be abolished is flawed and that the government should do anything they can to protect our property as it is one of the three rights we are given. If we looked at private property not as property, but as something to work towards as a reward, it will give individuals the sense of accomplishment which is an opiate that is much needed. If everyone in society had equal amounts of wealth, there would be a lack of dedication: why would one work harder than another if in the end they are all getting the same reward? The society needs private property as motivation to work hard and gives a reward for it. This is why I believe and agree with Lockes theory on property.

The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman Essay -- Thomas Friedman
The book, The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman draws attention to some very good points concerning globalization and the world economy today. Friedman emphasizes the status of America today in relation to the other countries of the world. As I looked at the things in which he warned about or highlighted, I realized the importance of this issue. He talks about a few aspects in which need to be kept competitive in order for America to retain their current standing in the world market. First of all, Friedman talks about the different levels of globalization. There are 3 different time periods in which the society has differed and changed, bringing us to where we are today. Globalization 1.0, which took place from 1492 to 1800, was the first step to making the world flatter. The coming to America, and the industrial drive that came along with this is what most characterized globalization 1.0. The industry drive was about things such as manpower and horsepower, and how well we could utilize these in the world market. This caused the world to ââ¬Å"shrinkâ⬠a little bit, and become flatter. With the discovery of a new world, it broadened the area in which business was conducted, but the commonality of rule and trade caused the distance to be spanned more frequently. I think Friedmanââ¬â¢s notions regarding globalization 1.0 is very accurate. The world in our terms began in 1492 with the discovery of North America. Once the area began to be inhabited and set tled, there was much more worldwide interaction. Communications and trade between the American colonies and England increased, and this began a more stable business of worldwide association. I believe that Friedmanââ¬â¢s theory is true, because the discovery of a land across the ocean for th... ...prevent this. This can be done through increasing importance on aspects such as the arts, or things that cannot be reproduced by computers or technology. Friedman stresses the importance of fine-tuning right-brained activities and applications. Also, a passion for what one is doing and having good people skills can greatly increase oneââ¬â¢s desirability. Friedmanââ¬â¢s theories have actually caused me to think a little bit differently about how the world job market is evolving. He seemed to make very valid points about being culturally and internationally aware, and the stressing the importance of keeping up with the level of expectation today. Through being introduced to these important issues, I feel as if I can be more aware and competitive as I live in a flatter world. Work Cited Friedman, Thomas L. (1996). The world is flat. Effects Of Divorce On The United States - 1041 Words
The topic of divorce, for many decades, has been a topic that fell into the domain of taboo. In more recent years, society within the united states has brought the topic into the limelight by desensitizing the term. Thus, the divorce rates in the US have went up. However, a divorce has both positive and negative implications. Also, there have been backlashes against divorce, but there has also been a positive feedback system employed to aid in the process that surround divorce. The partitioning between the political parties can be further exemplified in topic of divorce. Personally, I view divorce as a hybrid between both a social problem and a solution. To elaborate, the benefits of the divorce viewed as a solution are numerous. For example, a divorce allows for unhappy individuals to break away from their current dysfunctional marriage and pursue a more ideal relationship. All to often, people located in a poor marriage feel as if they are stranded and have no way of pursuing the relationship they so desire. This state of mind can proliferate into a poor mental state and such diseases as depression can manifest. Moreover, I have observed the consequences of a poor marriage without a divorce to fall back on. My aunt was basically forced to marry a man she did not want to be with on the ground of money. The Case of Lady Sannox - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 770 Downloads: 9 Date added: 2017/09/17 Category Literature Essay Type Argumentative essay Did you like this example? ââ¬Å"The Case of Lady Sannoxâ⬠Would you ever consider lying to the person you love? The one person you trust and care about most in the world? In the last few years, divorce rates have risen dramatically. Many of these divorces are the effects of secrets, lies, and the rise of temptation in our modern world. The relationship between Lady and Lord Sannox in the short story ââ¬Å"The Case of Lady Sannox,â⬠by Arthur Conan Doyle, is an example of a marriage destroyed by deceit and lies. In Doyleââ¬â¢s story, each character portrays deceitful qualities while Lord Sannox takes his revenge upon the arrogant Doctor Stone and Lord Sannoxââ¬â¢s unfaithful wife. The lives of the characters in this story are controlled by many of the qualities that cause marriages to fail such as revenge, arrogance, and deceit. Revenge is the desire to repay injury for injury, which is exactly what Lord Sannox does. His heart is brutally broken by his promiscuous wife who is havin g affairs with several men, including a man named Doctor Douglas Stone. So, in order to pay her back for the pain she causes him, he derives a plan. One night, he disguises himself and begs for the Doctorââ¬â¢s help, claiming his situation is urgent. After some explaining and a very persuasive bribe, Doctor Stone agrees to check on the manââ¬â¢s wife (who supposedly has a poisonous infection) and see what he can do. Lord Sannos then brings him to his house to perform an operation he convinces the doctor is necessary for her to live. Although this scheme is gruesome and horrifying, Lord Sannox finds great satisfaction in watching his wife, Lady Sannox, have her lip be surgically removed by the oblivious Dr. Stone, using no anesthetic or pain reliever. As a result, Lord Sannox obtains his revenge on not only his wife, but also her arrogant lover. To be arrogant or proud means to exaggerate oneââ¬â¢s importance in an overbearing manner. Doctor Douglas Stoneââ¬â¢s char acter portrays this quality by neither caring if people find out about the affair nor trying to keep it a secret. He is well known for his work, so he does not feel it is a problem if there are rumors about him and the married Lady Sannox. Because he is such a successful doctor, he is very proud, which is the only reason he decides to take the job offered by Lord Sannox. He is not performing the surgery because the patient desperately needs it, but because he worries what others will think of him if he turns down the man and his wife, and if they hire someone else. Although proud, arrogant, and selfish, Dr. Stoneââ¬â¢s character is not nearly as cruel and deceitful as that of Lord Sannoxââ¬â¢s wife. Deceit is the distortion of the truth for the purpose of misleading. Lady Sannoxââ¬â¢s character is the first to act untruthful; however, all three characters are deceitful in the story. By being unfaithful to her husband, Lady Sannox is lying to him and breaking his heart which soon causes him to lose his mind. The pain Lord Sannox feels because of the betrayal causes him to crave revenge and grow to be completely mad. Doctor Stone is deceitful by having an affair with a woman he knows is married, and for acting self-righteous and pompous about it. The crazy Lord Sannox lies and convinces Doctor Stone to perform a gruesome operation on his lover, making him deceitful as well. So, although they are all deceitful at one point, they each express this quality in their own ways. In the short story, ââ¬Å"The Case of Lady Sannox,â⬠Lord Sannox takes drastic measures to capture his revenge on the well-known, arrogant Doctor Douglas Stone and Lord Sannoxââ¬â¢s deceitful wife, Lady Sannox. He obtains his revenge by convincing the doctor to remove his wifeââ¬â¢s lower lip because he claims she has a poisonous infection, when all he really wants is to repay his wife for the pain she causes him. He also disguises himself with a beard and hat a nd tells Doctor Stone anesthetic is against their religion to cause his wife to feel as much pain as he feels. The way Doctor Stone acts about the affair makes his character seem arrogant, with his nonchalant attitude. Lady Sannox has affairs with other men although she has a loyal yet oblivious husband at home, making her a deceitful liar. So by choosing to betray and lie to her husband, Lady Sannox not only risks her marriage, but also her life. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! The Relationship Between Art And Commerce - 1261 Words
Historically, the relationship between art and commerce has been viewed as hierarchical. In this hierarchy of power, commerce dominates art and negatively influences artistic and creative potential of the art while art is viewed as a form of creative and cultural luxury that needs protection from external corruption. This argument has been brought up continually in academia, all similarly suggesting that there is something inherent in commerce and economics that undermines the purpose and authenticity of art. Whether this be the classic Bourdieun analysis of for-profit industries and their negative influence on art culture or the modern day parent who views the popular music and culture of her childââ¬â¢s generation as absent of value, there is a consistent contention at the core of commerce and arts relationship. While I undoubtedly agree that the politics of commerce and commercial activity has an effect on art, I do not believe that art therein lacks value because it was produc ed by a commercial entity or for profit. In this paper, I will argue that the contemporary relationship between art and commerce is one in which commerce does not domineer art and art culture but rather preserves and sustains it. Throughout the historical debate of this topic, many fallacies about the relationship between art and commerce have presented themselves. One of the most common misconceptions about this relationship is that commerce controls and debases art. Marketing Strategy of ABC Company-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about the Marketing Strategy of ABC Company. Answer: Introduction ABC is an Australian company whose headquarters is situated in Sydney and it has been manufacturing various types of products from last 17 years. Quality of the products manufactured by the ABC Company is very high and this is the reason for high demand for their products. Products manufactured by the organization are exported to all states of Australia. Despite being the demanded products, ABC Companys sales are continuously decreasing and with this effect, organizations budgets and their targets are decreasing continuously. For the same, CEO of the organization has called up a meeting under which adequate strategies and methods could be invented to gain the organizations position in the organization. CEO of ABC Company has not any idea in relevance with the decreasing demands of the products without making any amendments in the products quality. For the same, organization has asked an expert from outside of the organization to evaluate issues and solutions to resolve those issues s o that organization could be able to achieve its lost position in the market. Identification of Problems ABC Manufacturing Company is facing certain issues through which organization is not able to meet its expenses as profitability is being affected due to decreasing demand for the products. With the affecting demand of the products, an organization has appointed an expert to identify the issues faced by an organization. [1] Following are some of the issues through which business operations is getting affected: Substitutes offered by Competitors Every organization has certain primary and secondary competitors but those competitors who create the same kind of products as compared to the ABC Company are very dangerous. A small mistake from either of the organization will take them towards the loss conditions and towards the loss of consumers. For instance, Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo is the biggest example of this kind of issue. Both the companies have adopted the aggressive competition strategies to keep their products above from their competition. [2] The same situation is being faced by the ABC Company, as they produce a number of products which are distributed by them across all states of Australia. One of its competitors has developed the same product with better specifications in comparison. Due to this, ABCs products have been failed in the market and to improve from this issue. The organization needs to evaluate the external factors so that appropriate amendments could be made at a certain point of time. A competitor of ABC Manufacturing Company has taken the advantage of this issue and due to this; their sales have been decreased continuously. [3] As ABC manufacturing company is involved in developing various types of products which are distributed across the Australian state hence; market research needs to be performed to gain the knowledge about the dynamic choice of customers and other relevant factors of the dynamic business environment. Due to a production of various products, an organization was not able to concentrate on all of them appropriately, hence; for improving the conditions of the organization they need to divide the organization as department wise and a head should be appointed for each department. This will help the organization to concentrate on all types of products manufactured by the organization. [4] Change in the Customers Choice Customers choice is dynamic in nature and with the changing demands of the consumers, business environment also changes. Business environment and industries are dependent upon the consumers needs, their requirements and their choices. The market trend is also set up by the consumers. This is the biggest reason for conducting market research and with the results obtained from market research, appropriate techniques are identified to match up the consumers' requirements. Customers follow the market trend and trend is also setup by the people only. It is often seen that the people follow the products used by their favorite persons, celebrities, etc. To increase the demand for the products, organizations also wish to promote their products with the help of famous personalities of the country. Both these are issues faced by the ABC Company which is affecting the organizations sales despite being improvised technologies, improvised features and customer satisfaction. The basic concern is lack of market research, changing products features as per the customers demand, as per the market trends, etc. Solutions to the issues faced by ABC Company The first issue faced by the ABC Manufacturing company is substitutes offered by its competitors. The products delivered by organizations competitor are filled with unique features and needs satisfying. For this reason, ABC Companys sales and budgets are declining rapidly. Other issue is the rapid change in the customers needs and wants. [5] To overcome from this situation, the expert who was appointed to resolve the issues of the organization has suggested some of the methods through which organization could move up to the next level. For determining the affected area of the organization, an expert has implemented adequate set off strategies with a view to developing organization's goodwill in the dynamic business environment.[6] Following are some of the strategies suggested by the expert to implement those into the workplace of ABC Manufacturing Company to overcome the issues faced by them: Targeting market segments: ABC Company needs to evaluate its audience as per their production. For instance, ABC Company is producing toys, electronic games gadgets, etc. for children, hence; they should explore the audience below 14-15 years. To attract them towards the products manufactured by the organization, adequate strategies of promotion and advertisement must be followed. This will help the organization to build the image in the market and confidence towards the organization will also be developed in customers mind set. [7] Consumers needs: First of all, customers' requirements must be analyzed because this is the major reason due to which organization's sales report is showing declining rate. To overcome from this situation, products manufactured by ABC Company should be accompanied as per the consumers wants and their needs. This will help the organization to increase their sales as well as profitability. [8] Competition: Apart from these two strategies, to survive in the aggressive competitive environment, an organization needs to perform appropriately on adopted strategies. For instance, an organization has adopted the strategy of market research and competitive analysis to review its competitive organization's strategies, so that advanced and effective strategies could be built for promoting their products. This will help the organization to build its effective image in the competitive business environment as well as it will also help the organization to rebuilt its image in the Australian market. [9] Promotion: Promotional and advertisement techniques should include modern techniques such as electronic media, social media platforms, display shows, etc. these techniques are so helpful and result oriented. The electronic medium of promotion included television, radio, internet platforms, etc. These mediums are cheap as well as the organization could cover the whole Australia in one round. [10] Delivery: Apart from promotional techniques, the expert has also suggested to include some unique strategy of delivering the products to its consumers at no cost and at a promised time as well. This will build the trust for the organization in customers mind set. After Sale Service: providing after sale service is the most appropriate option to gain the customers confidence on the organizations working. This helps the customers not to take any burden over their heads for repairing or for damages in the certain period of time. They just need to call the organization; they will look after the products issues. [11] Customers feedbacks Complaints: This is the major issue through which organization looses its customers.
